Learner’s Licences (Class 7 & 8)

The Class 7 license is available to anyone 14 years or older who passes a written knowledge test on Alberta’s traffic laws and signs. Once you pass the test and meet all the requirements, you’ll be issued a learner’s license. Book over the phone or in person. There is a fee for every test you take even if you don’t pass. If you’re applying for a Class 8 license (motorcycle) no testing is needed.

  • Bring one primary ID: birth certificate, passport, Canadian citizenship certificate or permanent residency card
  • Bring one secondary ID: Alberta health card, valid status card
  • Residential and mailing address
  • Parent or signed parental consent form if under 18
  • If over 18, proof of Alberta residency (utility bill, rental agreement, bank statement, etc.)

Driver's Testing (Class 5)

Ready to take your Class 5 road test? You’ll need to have held a learner’s license for at least 12 months and be prepared with a safe, insured vehicle for the test. You can book your test in person or online. After passing the test, you’ll need to bring valid ID to complete your licensing. Your driving examiner does not issue the license; you must return to the registry with your paperwork to finalize it.

  • Class 7 learner’s license
  • One of the following: birth certificate, passport, citizenship certificate, permanent residency, Alberta Health Card, or Status Card

Trucking & Bus Licences
(Class 1 & 2)

If you’re pursuing a Class 1 or Class 2 driver’s licence, or need air brakes certification, both the training and driving tests must be arranged through the Fort Vermilion School Division. Ivy Lane Registry does not offer booking for these classes. Please contact the division directly to register for training or to book your road test.

Study Guides

Preparing for your Alberta drivers licence? Study guides are available to help you get ready for the written knowledge tests for Class 7 (Learner’s), Class 5 (Driver’s), and other licence types. These guides cover Alberta’s traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and more. You can download free digital copies below or pick up a printed version at our office. Studying the guide thoroughly before your test is the best way to ensure you pass on your first try.

Driver's Licence Renewal

In Alberta, most driver’s licenses are valid for 5 years, and it’s your responsibility to renew before it expires. Licenses expire on your birthday. You can sign up to get automatic reminders via text or email when your license is about to expire. You’ll need to bring valid ID, and if you’re renewing a commercial license (Class 1, 2, or 4), you’ll need an updated medical. Drivers turning 75 or older also need a doctor’s medical report.

  • Your current driver’s license
  • One piece of supporting ID (Alberta Health Card, birth certificate, passport, etc.)
  • Medical report (for Class 1, 2, 4 licenses or if you’re 75+)

Driver's Abstracts

A driver abstract is an official summary of your driving record in Alberta. It includes information like demerits, suspensions, convictions, and license classes. This is often required for employment purposes, insurance quotes, or when applying for a commercial license. The report can only be released to the driver or someone with written consent.

  • Your driver’s license

Vehicle Registration & Renewal

If you’ve just purchased a vehicle or are transferring ownership for the first time, you’ll need to register it in your name before driving it. This applies to both new and used vehicles.

  • Valid photo ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport)
  • Bill of sale or lease agreement (signed by buyer and seller) OR copy of will and death certificate if transferring registration from a deceased person
  • Valid insurance for the vehicle
  • NVIS for new vehicles or trailers
  • A letter of authority, if you’re registering the vehicle on someone else’s behalf or in joint names

Vehicle registrations in Alberta must be renewed either annually or biannually. Registrations expire on an assigned month based on your last name. You won’t get a reminder in the mail unless you sign up for email or text reminders through e-registry.ca. If your registration is expired, you may be ticketed if caught driving. You don’t need a new bill of sale for renewals.

  • Previous registration or license plate number
  • Valid insurance for the vehicle

Duplicate Vehicle Registration Certificate

If you’ve misplaced or damaged your vehicle registration certificate, you can request a duplicate. This is often needed if your current registration has faded, torn, or been lost altogether. The duplicate will show the same registration information and can be used for insurance and proof-of-ownership purposes.

  • Valid photo ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport)
  • Valid insurance for the vehicle

Vehicle Information Report (VIR)

A Vehicle Information Report (VIR) provides registration history and other useful details about a vehicle registered in Alberta. It shows things like the number of previous owners (not their names), registration dates, odometer readings (when available), and whether the vehicle has any branding such as salvage or rebuilt. It also reveals if there are any active liens registered through Alberta Registries. This report is commonly used when buying a used vehicle to check for red flags. Note that it does not include accident or service history—those would require a third-party report like CARFAX.

  • Valid photo ID
  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

In-Transit Permits

An in-transit permit allows you to drive an unregistered vehicle from point A to point B—such as from the place of purchase to your home, or from your home to an out-of-province inspection facility. These are valid for up to 7 days and cannot be extended. You must have valid insurance for the vehicle and must carry both the permit and insurance with you while driving.

  • Valid photo ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport)
  • Valid insurance for the vehicle

Custom License Plates

If you’re looking to personalize your vehicle, Alberta offers a selection of custom specialty license plates you can order through your local registry office. Options include the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames team plates, as well as the Support Our Troops plate. These plates come with a one-time fee and can be used on most passenger vehicles. Ask us in-office or order online at the links below.
